Weather you camped out, stood in the pre-order line or was one of the lucky one online pre-orders that got your phone early the iPhone is officially out. I unfortunately am still a Sprint customer itching hard to drop my contract for the new and beautiful iPhone 4. I did get a chance to stop by at the Apple Store today. The pre-order line was long and it really wasn’t moving. The display is as amazing as they said it would be. The resolution on the phone is fairly amazing.

At first glance:
Thing I liked
- Display
- The glossy feel
- iOS 4 – It clearly is a lot better then 3.1.3. A lot smoother and seems very clean.

Thing I dont like
- Multi tasking – Its not real multitasking. Apps are froze. So if you like gchat while you want to check you gmail. You won’t be receiving notifications that you got a message. Something that pre, android and blackberry already do very well. Lack of a similar feature has me on the fence, if I really want to swap carrier or should I settle for the EVO 4g.
- Weight – It feels heavy. Not as light as I was expecting.

Yes its true, the iPhone will finally have multitasking!  Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone OS 4 with typical Apple announcement fashion.

iPad was released on Saturday April 3 2010, and its working its way on making a huge splash in its opening week.  Some 300,000 iPads were sold on Sat. and the total was at 450,000 on Thursday.  Jobs Mentioned that 3.5 million downloads for the iPad apps.  I didn’t buy one just yet because I wanted to wait to see what iPhone OS 4.0 had in store.  I did go check out the iPad at my local Apple Store and I was pretty amazed by its performance.  To many it appears as an useless large iPod Touch but really its not that large. Possible 4 iPod Touches put together.  The iPad has a beautiful display, its fast and smooth, the apps available on it are pretty amazing.  So its all perfect no.  Thing I hate: The Black outline, no direct usb inputs, apps are overpriced.  I spent about 30 minutes messing around with the iPad, and I overheard many customers mentioned the iPad being overpriced, a Large iPod, and apps being overpriced.  The App Store brought success to the iPhone and iPod Touch, but many of the programs on the iPhone are completely free.  iPad was released with only 3500 Apps, which is a lot for opening day, but choices are not as abundant as the iPod.  Will I buy an iPad? Eventually, upset that iPhone OS 4.0 doesn’t hit the iPad till Fall 2010.   Also if you are wondering, many Apple Stores have the iPad in stock.

With the iPod, iMac, iPhone, iTouch… it only make sense that iSlate, iMac Touch are not viable options.  Apple will stay consistent to it naming convention and call their prize possession iTablet.  (Well at least I am really banking on that they will.)

WSJ is reporting that the Apple Tablet will be sold for $1000 and will start shipping in March.

At the last Apple Keynote everyone was expecting something big from Apple. An Apple table specifically.  Something that would change the game for tablet computing.  Instead we got a few mac updates and ipod beefed up.  On Thursday Apple stock jumped 7 dollars , closing at 209.10, the highest its closed since earning reports last November.  Reports by several media houses are expecting a tablet from Apple as soon as February.  Only question is will this tablet be successful??

Will the table be a larger ipod? will ipod apps be ported to it. Will it be a more versatile interface, enabling programmers to expand on cocoa programming? Its unclear what Apple has in store for us. But answer may be near.

Valleywag reported that Apple will make a lot of dollars on each iPhone users over 2 year span. I just think Steve could cash in even if he didn’t make an exclusive deal with AT&T.

Apple Gets $135/per 8 GB iPhone (probably more now, since costs have gone down)
Apple Gets $18/month per user, using iPhone.. $216/2yrs
= 135 + 216 = $351/iPhone
Apple has sold 5.4 million iPhones
AT&T in march reported to have 2.5 million iPhone customers

Steve is losing out on $216 on almost 2 million iPhones.

My rant:
I am sure Apple could have made a deal that would have worked with multiple carriers. They probably would have reached the 10 million goal if the supported CDMA networks.

For example Palm. Palm sells the Centro for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. Palm also sells an unlocked version of the phone for 200 dollars more then the carrier specific phones.

Apple knows, the industry knows – iPhone is the best phone out there. But as for many companies they have contracts with Verizon and Sprint. Imagine if the iPhone was able to those markets. The reasons are quiet apparent why Apple is 2nd to Rimm’s Blackberry. It will continue to stay this way until Apple offers the iPhone to other carriers.

The math

$216 x 2.5 million = $540 million –> not all upfront
$135 x 5.4 million = $729 million
Total = $1.269 billion

$135 x 10 million (estimated users, if phone was available to verizon and sprint) = $1.35 billion
also all upfront, there is no waiting on the money.

$100 million isn’t exactly chump change..

Bias:
I am a Sprint user. Why? Cause its cheap and I am a happy Palm Centro user. If the iPhone was available to Sprint, I would have it.

What should be expected from Steve Job’s Keynote on Monday? Steve has been known to introduce 2-3 new products at most keynotes. Technology over the last 6 months has become cheap, real cheap. This is what I expect to see.
- The much anticipated 3g iPhone – will it have more features then just 3g, maybe at 32 gb version.
- Price drop on the iPod Touch
- Hardware Update to the Macbook Air
- Mac Mini update?

There is much more you can think of but really I dont see any improvements to macbook/pro, they just refreshes in March.
